  2. You overpaid your estimated tax payments for the year shown.
  3. The IRS sent CP17 to notify you that your excess estimated tax payments have been released and a refund of the excess payments will be sent to you.

The IRS made a change to the Making Work Pay and/or Government Retiree Credit on your tax return.

Why you received IRS Notice CP12M

  1. You filed a Form 1040 tax return claiming the Making Work Pay and/or Government Retiree Credit.
  2. The IRS made a change in the calculation of the Making Work Pay and/or Government Retiree Credit during return processing.
  3. This change resulted in a refund or a change in the amount of the refund shown on the return.
  4. The IRS sent CP12M to explain the change that was made and to notify you of the corrected refund amount.

Notice deadline: 60 days

If you miss the deadline: The IRS will not reverse the change and you will have to file a claim for refund.
